Aims and objectives: to revise vocabulary; to revise the use of personal pronouns with "to be"; to develop reading skills; to develop speaking skills of pair work; to develop attention and imagination.
Warm up Revision. My Family and Friends
The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I'm glad to see you. How are you?
Students revise the sound . The rhyme is on the blackboard (or in the handouts):
The sun shines bright
And flowers bloom
In June and July
And August, too.
I bathe in the sea
I lie in the sun
You play with me —
The summer is fun.
Talk about summer holidays
▼ Where were you in summer? Students' answers.
Teacher introduces himself by saying "Hello, my name's... What's your name? What is his/her name? His (her) name is..." and each student in turn does the same one by one. Then students do the same introducing the next student.
Introducing the topic
Teacher uses the computer presentation or prepares pictures to introduce the topic. Pictures may be rather big ones and students will play the roles of family members. Students have to name the pictures and guess the topic of the lesson.
A grandfather, a grandmother, a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a baby, a dog — a family.
Variants are possible — parents, grandparents, a sister, a brother.
T. Which of these words isn't right?
S. A dog.
T. Why do you think so?
S. Because... (it's a pet; it is not a member of a family).
Teacher has to explain that English people often think dogs are members of their families.
Teacher writes the topic on the board.
Teacher proposes to look at the ex. 1 (p. 4) and find the words in the box; then to call the other words (a family tree, parents, grandparents, dad, a husband, mum, a wife, a sister, a brother, a grandma, granny, a grandpa, granddad, an aunt, an uncle, a grandson, a granddaughter, cousins)
Teacher may give other words: a niece, a nephew.
T. What does it mean — family tree? How can your explain it?
Students try to explain the meaning.
T. Look at the picture and complete the sentences, then talk about other family members.
Students complete the sentences as it is in the example (ex. 2, p. 4) using the picture.
The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:
Head and shoulders
Knees and toes (3 times)
Head and shoulders
Knees and toes
Eyes and ears, and nose.
Ask students to read the text (ex. 3, p. 5) and do the task after it.
Students'answers (ex. 4, p. 5): 1 Ann; 2 Craig; 3 Ann's grandparents; 4 Ann; 5 Craig.
Before reading, pay students' attention to pronunciation of "th".
Teacher checks understanding by asking students the questions on the texts:
1. Where was Craig born?
2. How many members are in the Craig's family?
3. Does Craig live in London?
4. What's the name of Dan's cousin?
5. How many members are in the Ann's family?
6. Is her family a typical one?
Work in pairs. Students make pairs and prepare dialogues using the questions and patterns (ex. 5, p. 5)
Ex. 6, p. 5, write about students' families, prepare to retelling, draw the picture (or bring the photo).
T. What things about yourself can you add? About your pets? About your favourite sports? Students' answers.
