Aims and objectives: to present the topic; to revise the use of "there is/there are"; to introduce and practise vocabulary; to develop students' listening and speaking skills; to develop students' skills of making utterance.
Warm up Structure
The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I'm glad to see you. How are you?
Students revise pronunciation of linking r. Students listen to the sentences and repeat them. The sentences are on the blackboard (or in the handouts):
n There is [oariz] a book.
a Care about [kearabaut] your little sister.
a There are [oara:] some places of interest.
о It's quite far away [fa:rawei].
a Give me more apples [maraplz), please.
a There are [dera:] five kittens.
Introducing the topic
Teacher presents the topic of the lesson with the vocabulary (ex. 1, p. 140). Students' task is to listen to the words, repeat them and make the sentences using "there is /there are" as in the example.
Vocabulary practice. To practise vocabulary, students look at the picture and say what places are in the city (ex. 2, p. 140).
The teacher divides students into pairs. Students read the dialogues rex. 3, p. 141) and act them out saying about places where they live.
Students ask and answer the questions about the place where they/their friends live. Students use ex. 6, p. 142 as the example.
The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:
I can read. I can play.
I study every day.
I'm bending. I'm staying.
I'm.stretching I'm stamping.
I'm jumping. I'm running.
I'm clapping, it's funny.
Students study the Grammar box (p. І41) and answer when we use these structures.
To practise grammar, students do ex. 4, p. 141 using "there is /there are" in affirmative and negative sentences. After this, students check the exercise.
Answers: 1 are; 2 is; 3 aren't; 4 aren't; 5 aren't; 6 is.
To practise the use of short answers and making questions, students write questions to the sentences (ex. 5, p. 141-142).
1. Is there a supermarket in your village? — Yes, there is.
2. Is there a lake in your town? — No, there isn't.
3. Are there many trees in your city? — No, there aren't.
4. Is there a bus station in your town? — Yes, there is.
5. Is there is a mobile phone shop in your village? — No, there isn't.
6. Are there many monuments in your city? — Yes, there are.
Ex. 7, p. 142.
Summary and feedback
The teacher summarizes the work by asking for students* feedback.
