Aims and objectives: to revise and practise vocabulary; to develop students listening and reading skills; to develop cross-cultural competence.
Warm up Ukrainian Traditions
The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I'm glad to see you. How are you?
Students revise homophones. First, students listen to the word pairs, the, they repeat them. The teacher gives the definitions of the homophones if it is necessary. The pairs of the words are on the blackboard (or in the handouts):
□ [bru:z] brews — bruise
□ [si:] sea — see
□ [ka?f] cache — cash
□ ['karat] carat — carrot
Checking on homework
Students read their works (selectively).
The teacher can use ex. 1, p. 177. Students are divided on four
groups, read the questions and answer them in turn. Then, students
choose a slip of paper with the name of one of the holidays. They have
to describe some traditions starting like this:
a On this holiday we usually decorate our flat/house with the lights
and toys. We place a green tree in our flat etc.
Other students have to guess what the holiday is. One correct answer is one score.
Introducing the topic
Teacher presents the topic of the lesson with the text for listening (ex. 2, p. 177). Students listen to the letter and say what Ukrainian traditions Ann is writing about.
Students read the statements (ex. 3, p. 177) and choose the correct items to complete them.
Answers: 1 traditional and public; 2 don't work and study; 3 some; 4 writes; 5 writes; 6 next Christmas.
The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:
Two little sausages are Frying in a pan. One went pop And other went bam!
The teacher divides students into two groups. The first group makes a story about Christmas traditions in Ukraine, and the other one makes a story about traditions in Great Britain. Students in groups share their information, and then, talk about this holiday to the class. They use ex. 4, p. 178 and pictures to it.
Work in class. Students continue their work on this topic. They try to remember as many facts about holidays as they can. They have to talk about different holidays, not only about Christmas.

Summary and feedback
The teacher summarizes the work by asking for students' feedback.
