Aims and objectives: to practise vocabulary; to practise the use of special wh-questions; to practice the writing of a letter; to develop students' speaking and listening skills; to develop cross-cultural competence.
Warm up Time-table
The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I'm glad to see you. How are you?
Students revise sounds [c] and [ее]. Students listen to the words and repeat them. The pairs of the words are on the blackboard (or in the handouts):
□ Bad — bed □ Man — men
□ Bag — beg □ Tan — ten
□ Lam — LEM/Lem □ Rad— red
□ Lag — leg
Checking on homework
Students read their works one by one, and others check and comment if it's necessary.
Answers: I was; 2 woke; 3 did not have; 4 gave; 5 like; 6 had; 7 forgot; 8 let; 9 played; 10 went.
Introducing the topic
To introduce the topic of the lesson, the teacher gives students the text for listening and reading (ex. 1, p. 193). First, students have to listen and read the text; then, they have to find the names of new subjects they have this year and match them with the teachers' names, for example:
□ Koval Hanna Markivna teaches us History.
Then, students name other teachers and subjects as in the example. Students give double answers — the teacher's name from the text-book and the name of their teacher.
Work in class. Students look at the table (ex. 3, p. 193) and say what time the lessons start in the school, a The first lesson starts at half past eight, о It finishes at fifteen past nine. a The first break lasts ten minutes.
a Every lesson lasts forty five minutes. Students do the same, but talk about their school (ex. 4, p. 193).
The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:
One, two, three! Let me see Who likes coffee And who likes tea? One, two, three! Oh, I see He likes coffee And they like tea!
Students listen to the interview (ex. 5, p. 193-194), and then read it and complete the questions starting with the words for special questions: What time...? How...? Which...? Why...? Do...?.
Answers: 1 What time do you; 2 Why; 3 How do you; 4 Do; 5 Which is.
Students read the words and phrases from the box (ex. 6, p. 194) and complete the sentences. Then, students read the dialogues on their own and act them out.
